Sprained Thumb
Hand & Wrist Broken Bones & Injuries
Sprains occur when ligaments in a part of the body stretch beyond their natural limits or tear. In the thumb, this usually happens when a strong force bends it backwards, or through a fall to an outstretched hand. A thumb sprain may weaken your ability to grasp objects and can lead to lasting instability of the joint if left untreated.
Conservative treatment (using a splint or brace to immobilise the thumb) is often effective. However, surgical intervention may be needed if tears to the ligaments occur or if a fracture to the thumb is present.
